CarPlay startup sound: how to play a custom sound when your iPhone connects
Published · Updated · menus checked against Apple's Shortcuts User Guide · written by N5 Labs, maker of Car Play Widgets: Dashboard
Short answer
To get a CarPlay startup sound, create an automation in Apple's Shortcuts app that uses the CarPlay trigger set to Connects, and give it an action that plays your sound. iOS runs the automation each time the iPhone connects, and a second automation set to Disconnects can play a different sound when it disconnects. CarPlay has no sound setting of its own, and an app only supplies the sound action. This guide uses Car Play Widgets: Dashboard, which N5 Labs, the publisher of this site, makes and which the iPhone lists as Car Widgets. It adds three Shortcuts actions: CarPlay Connected Sound, CarPlay Disconnected Sound and Home Sound. Version 1.5 has 174 sounds, 14 of them free, and Pro unlocks the rest plus your own audio files of up to 30 seconds. The steps differ on iOS 27 and iOS 26.

On iOS 27
In iOS 27 an automation is added to a shortcut. These menu names are from Apple's iOS 27 Shortcuts User Guide; we confirmed the action names in the app.
- 1
Choose the sound in the app
Open Car Widgets, which is how the iPhone lists Car Play Widgets: Dashboard. In the Sounds tab, pick the sound for the trigger named CarPlay connects. Tap a sound to hear it, and tap the plus button to use it for a trigger.
- 2
Create a shortcut with the sound action
Open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut. Tap Add Action, search for Car Widgets, and choose CarPlay Connected Sound. Tap Done.
- 3
Add the CarPlay automation
Open that shortcut, tap Edit, then tap Automation. Choose the CarPlay trigger and select Connects.
- 4
Let it run without asking
Apple lists CarPlay among the triggers that can run automatically. Follow Enable an automation to run without asking in Apple's guide, which is under Edit and Privacy for the shortcut.
- 5
Test while parked
Connect the iPhone to CarPlay. The sound plays when the automation runs.
On iOS 26 and earlier
Before iOS 27 you create a personal automation in the Automation tab. The Sounds tab in the app has a How to Activate button that shows the same steps with pictures.
- 1
Choose the sound in the app
Open Car Widgets and go to the Sounds tab. Pick the sound for the trigger named CarPlay connects.
- 2
Start a new automation
Open the Shortcuts app, tap Automation, and start a new automation with the plus button. Apple's guide calls this Create Personal Automation; the app's own setup guide shows the button as New Automation.
- 3
Choose the CarPlay trigger
Scroll to CarPlay and tap it. Select Connects. To skip the confirmation each time, choose Run Immediately, which Apple's guide describes as turning off Ask Before Running. Then tap Next.
- 4
Add the sound action
Choose to create a blank automation. Tap Add Action, search for Car Widgets, and choose CarPlay Connected Sound.
- 5
Save and test while parked
Tap Done. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay and listen for the sound.
A separate sound when CarPlay disconnects
Yes, a Shortcuts automation can do this. Apple's Shortcuts guide says the CarPlay trigger has two options: Connects runs the automation when the device connects to CarPlay, and Disconnects runs it when the device disconnects. Apple Shortcuts User Guide: Travel triggers
So the disconnect sound is a second automation. Repeat the steps above with the CarPlay trigger set to Disconnects and the action CarPlay Disconnected Sound, and pick its sound in the app under the trigger named CarPlay disconnects. The two automations are independent, so each can have its own sound.
A sound when you get home
Use the Arrive trigger with your home location and the action Home Sound. iOS handles the location, and the app does not ask for location access.
If the startup sound does not play
Check these in order. They are the setup steps above, turned into checks. We have not reproduced each failure on a device.
- The automation exists and uses the CarPlay trigger set to Connects. A Disconnects automation plays only when CarPlay disconnects.
- The automation is allowed to run without asking. On iOS 26 that is Run Immediately. On iOS 27 follow Enable an automation to run without asking in Apple's guide. If it still asks, the sound waits for your tap.
- The action is CarPlay Connected Sound, found by searching Shortcuts for Car Widgets, the name the iPhone uses for the app.
- A sound is picked in the app's Sounds tab for the trigger named CarPlay connects.
- The sound is one you can use. 14 catalog sounds are free. The others, and your own audio file, need Pro to use.
- The volume is up. Volume, audio routing, Focus settings and the vehicle can change what you hear.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay while parked, then listen again.
Apple's CarPlay settings page lists no sound or chime setting, so there is nothing to switch on in CarPlay itself. Apple iPhone User Guide: Change settings in CarPlay
Which startup and connect sounds you can use
| Sound | Count or format | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Free catalog sounds | 14 of the 174 in the catalog | Free |
| Other catalog sounds | The remaining 160 | Pro to use; free to hear |
| Your own audio file | MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF or CAF, up to 30 seconds | Pro to keep; free to hear |
The action plays the sound without opening the app. Volume, audio routing, Focus settings and the vehicle can change what you hear, so the test in your own car is what counts. Any Shortcuts action that plays audio can be used in the same automation; you do not need our app for the automation itself.
The catalog in version 1.5 has 174 sounds in eight groups: 67 spoken announcements in the style of a flight cabin, each made for one car make, 29 in Meme & Fun, 20 engine sounds, 20 cinematic sounds, 12 each in Social, Gaming and Movies, and 2 reminders. We print no maker names here. The site and the app are not affiliated with any car maker.
What Car Play Widgets costs and what it cannot do
- Free: you can browse and customize every design. Saving a widget requires Pro, a weekly or yearly subscription with no free trial.
- It has no CarPlay app of its own and does not change or reskin the CarPlay interface. Its widgets are standard small iPhone widgets.
- It reads no vehicle data, so it cannot show speed, fuel, mileage or range, and it does not ask for location access.
- CarPlay widgets need iOS 26 or later, which includes iOS 27, and a CarPlay display that shows widgets. The app itself installs on iOS 17 or later.
- Car Play Widgets 1.5 has no synchronized lyrics. Its text cards show words you type yourself.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play a custom sound when my iPhone connects to CarPlay?
Create an automation in Apple's Shortcuts app with the CarPlay trigger set to Connects, and give it an action that plays your sound. With Car Play Widgets: Dashboard, the app N5 Labs makes, that action is called CarPlay Connected Sound and it appears under the app name Car Widgets. Set the automation to run without asking, then test it while parked.
Can I change the CarPlay startup sound?
Not in CarPlay itself. Apple's CarPlay settings page lists no sound setting, and no Apple page we read documents a CarPlay startup sound. What you can do is add one: a Shortcuts automation with the CarPlay trigger set to Connects plays a sound of your choice each time the iPhone connects.
Can I set a different sound for when CarPlay disconnects?
Yes. Apple's Shortcuts guide gives the CarPlay trigger two options, Connects and Disconnects. Make a second automation with the trigger set to Disconnects and give it its own sound action. In Car Play Widgets that action is CarPlay Disconnected Sound.
What can a CarPlay sound app do?
One thing: supply a sound action that a Shortcuts automation runs. iOS detects the connection and runs the automation. An app cannot detect CarPlay for you, cannot change a sound that CarPlay itself makes, and cannot add a sound setting to CarPlay.
Is there a CarPlay startup sound app?
Several. On October 6, 2026 the US App Store listings of HiCar, myCar, Car Widgets: Style Dashboard and CARFACE all advertised startup or connection sounds, and HiCar's listing also covered arrival and disconnect cues. Car Play Widgets: Dashboard plays sounds for CarPlay connect, disconnect and arriving home through a Shortcuts automation.
Can I use my own audio file as the CarPlay connect sound?
Yes, with Pro. In Car Play Widgets you can import an MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF or CAF file of up to 30 seconds as a custom sound; a longer file is cut to its first 30 seconds. Anyone can import a file and hear it, and keeping a custom sound requires Pro.
Will the sound play without asking me every time?
It can. Apple's Shortcuts guide lists CarPlay among the triggers that can run automatically. On iOS 26, choose Run Immediately, which Apple's guide describes as turning off Ask Before Running. On iOS 27, follow Enable an automation to run without asking in Apple's guide.
Why does Shortcuts not show Car Play Widgets?
Search for Car Widgets. That is the name the iPhone uses for Car Play Widgets: Dashboard. Its three actions are CarPlay Connected Sound, CarPlay Disconnected Sound and Home Sound.
Does the app detect CarPlay or change CarPlay's own sounds?
No. iOS detects the connection and runs the automation. The app only supplies the action that plays your sound. It has no CarPlay app, does not change the CarPlay interface, and does not use your location. The home-arrival sound uses the Arrive trigger in Shortcuts, which iOS handles.
